Description
Another Group from Durham University's Physics Department to have expanded its activities into the NETPark Research Institute - an expansion that reflects the recent successes of the Group in securing research funding and in the establishment at NETPark of its spin-out Durham Scientific Crystals Ltd.

The main activity is to 'grow' large diameter crystals for use in X-ray detection. The work at NETPark will contribute to the substantial HEXITEC programme to develop high energy, colour X-ray imaging. High energy X-rays are very penetrating and they can be used, for example, to inspect the inside of engine casings. The "colour" part of HEXITEC can be used in substance identification such as the detection of 'dirty bombs', or other nuclear material at airports. Another interesting possibility will be to change the way in which X-rays are used in medicine
