Description: Research and Development (R&D) Relief is a Corporation Tax relief that may reduce your companys tax bill by more than your actual expenditure on allowable R&D costs.

Alternatively, if your company is small or medium-sized, you may be able to choose to receive a tax credit instead, by way of a cash sum paid by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

R&D Relief schemes.

Your company can only claim R&D Relief if its liable for Corporation Tax.

There are two schemes for claiming relief, depending on the size of the company:
• The Small or Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) Scheme
• The Large Company Scheme
The Small and Medium-sized Enterprise Scheme.

From 1 August 2008, the tax relief on allowable R&D costs is 175 per cent - that is, for each £100 of qualifying costs, your company could have the income on which Corporation Tax is paid reduced by an additional £75 on top of the £100 spent.

It also includes a payable credit in some circumstances.

HMRC R&D Specialist Teams.

There are specialist HMRC units located throughout the UK who are able to assist you with your claim.

If you have any questions about R&D Relief, the appropriate specialist unit will be happy to help you.

She has experience of reviewing claims across the spectrum from multi-national corporations to family-owned SMEs.
Leesa will be able to give advice on how to make a claim and the type of records that companies need to keep.
