Carol Metcalf talks about the world of gallery ownership, what is involved, contracts, people she represents and how she works with and supports local talent at her premises in the Tyne valley, plus how different disciplines might be able to maximise their profit out of their artworks.
Elaine Campbell will discuss protection issues surrounding a piece of art, how to maximise income from one piece of art, and good professional copyright practise.
Whether running a gallery, organising an exhibition or sitting down to create a masterpiece, if you are involved in the visual arts it is crucial that you know what intellectual property is and how it affects you. It is easy to forget about intellectual property issues. Yet, ignoring intellectual property could seriously harm your business and endanger all the time and effort you have put into your art. Someone asks you to create a piece of art for them - who owns the intellectual property in the work? You are asked to sign an "assignment" - what does this mean? If you run a gallery, what happens when you re-sell an expensive piece of work?
Own It have invited a gallery owner and an IP lawyer to help guide you through copyright and other relevant intellectual property rights, provide you with the tools to protect yourself and give you some insider knowledge!
