The future of warfare is taking shape with the development of a robot that can support soldiers in the field.
The mobile Legged Squad Support System (LS3) prototype has demonstrated its ability to follow a person using sensors to distinguish between trees, rocks, people and terrain.
US Defence Advanced Projects Agency (Darpa) is looking to refine the LS3's key capabilities to make sure it can support marines and other troops - including seeing whether or not it can carry 400lb of equipment over 20 miles in 24 hours without the need for refuelling.
Also, tests are to be carried out on specific features such as using the unit's vision sensors to track specific individuals or vehicles while still making corrections to its course, with regard to obstacles in its way.
"Hearing technology" is also proposed, which allows squad members to use speech commands to order the unit to carry out certain functions. It can also serve as a mobile power source, allowing troops to recharge batteries for equipment like radios while out in the field.
