The UK Government is to present honours to some of the UK's leading scientists, awarding them with National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) professorships.
Along with the title, each of the eight academics will also receive around £1.5 million in research funding, to be used to combat illnesses that affect millions each year.
The newly appointed professors were selected by an independent panel of experts, which included scientists and medical specialists from around the world.
Projects that will be launched off the back of this funding injection include one which will tailor cancer treatments to individual patients and offer them a higher standard of life, by using a newly identified tumour signature.
Commenting on the new appointments, chief medical officer and chief scientific adviser at the Department of Health, Professor Dame Sally Davies said: "Each one of these professors will provide much needed research leadership in their chosen field, and help us build more capacity and capability within the NIHR."
