Tribology for Energy Generation and Efficiency
17 February 2010, Institute of Physics, London, UK
Organised by IOP Tribology Group
This one day conference aims to provide information on the role of friction and wear in energy generation and mechanical efficiency. Academic and industrial speakers will discuss topics including testing of friction and wear at high temperatures, powertrain efficiency and energy efficient lubricants

Complex Fluid-Fluid Interfaces
25 February 2010, Institute of Physics, London, UK
Organised by the IOP Liquids and Complex Fluids Group
The self-assembly of spherical particles at liquid-liquid interfaces (both planar and in Pickering emulsions) has proved to be a rich source of new physics. Building on this, recent studies have probed the behaviour of anisotropic or magnetic particles and systems where one or both of the fluids are complex. Investigations are also underway into the role of interfacial elasticity on bulk and microfluidic flow properties. This one day meeting aims to bring together experimentalists, simulators and theoreticians interested in interfacial trapping and its influence on flow.

International Conference on Optical Angular Momentum
23 - 25 March 2010, University of York, UK
Supported by the Optics and Photonics Division
The main objective of this conference is to bring together the practitioners and others interested to identify new developments and directions for further exploration of this rich ?eld, encompassing a broad range of topics including: the theoretical foundations; techniques leading to the experimental realisation of phase-bearing light; utility (both classical and quantum contexts) for manipulating various forms of matter in the bulk and in microscopic forms; cooling and trapping using twisted light; effects associated with a specific helicity of light; connections between phase singularities and orbital angular momentum; types of beam (Bessel, Laguerre-Gaussian etc); angular uncertainty relations; surface vortices, and applications including quantum information, optical spanners etc.
On-line registration is still available. Please note the early registration deadline.
Early registration deadline: 26 January 2010

Plasmonics UK Meeting
10 May 2010, Institute of Physics, London, UK
Organised by the IOP Quantum Electronics and Photonics Group and the IOP Optics and Photonics Division.
Plasmonics: the next five years. This conference aims to capture the state of the art of UK strength in plasmonics, and to brainstorm where it is heading in the next 5 years.
The NETPark Net project is part financed by the European Union’s ERDF Competitiveness programme 2007-13, securing £0.22m of ERDF investment through the Regional Development Agency One NorthEast. The ERDF programme is bringing over £250m into the North East to support innovation, enterprise and business support across the region. This project has received funding from Durham County Council through County Durham Development Company.
