Controversial IVF method announced

A controversial new method that allows IVF users to identify inherited genetic diseases could be available in the UK within the year.

A controversial new method that allows IVF users to identify inherited genetic diseases could be available in the UK within the year.

Clinical trials of "karyomapping" are set to get under way in the UK and US in the next few months but they have been met with some scepticism after it was suggested that they could be used to screen out non-serious illnesses and minor genetic defects.

The method could also theoretically be used to help couples have "designer" babies with favourable genetic traits.

However, karyomapping has been successful in initial trials in spotting serious hereditary diseases such as Down's syndrome without having to pinpoint individual genetic mutations.

Scientists simply analyse DNA of the parents and close family to identify "marker" points that may cause a hereditary disease. If these regions of abnormality are evident in the tested embryo, a decision will then be made whether to proceed with implantation.

The screening system is far quicker than conventional methods, with scientists hoping that results will be available in less than 24 hours as opposed to weeks or months.
