A Newcastle firm which plans to replace call centre workers with artificially-intelligent 'robots' has announced an agreement with Sunderland Software City

Artingence will work with the Wearside initiative - which aims to encourage the growth of software businesses in Sunderland - on several different projects.

The partnership follows a series of meetings between the company and the University of Sunderland's Professor John MacIntyre and Software City CEO Bernie Callaghan.

The University of Sunderland is involved in the development of some of the world's leading artificially-intelligent technology.

It also specialises in technology focusing on the interaction between computers and humans. It has laboratory facilities which will be used to develop Artingence's plans for a call centre staffed by computers.

Dr Odin Taylor, an expert in artificial intelligence and software development, will lead the collaborative venture and will advise Artingence on technical matters alongside Professor MacIntyre.
