Durham University is a world-class university in two locations: the city of Durham and its Queen's Campus in Stockton.

Durham University has been named as one of the UK's top five universities according to a new guide.  The Complete University Guide, published by The Independent, ranked Durham as the fifth best institution in the country - up from sixth place last year.

All Durham University departments have a strong element of world leading research and the University did outstandingly well in the RAE 2008. Twenty of the 30 Units of Assessment (departments) have at least 60% of their work graded as internationally excellent or world leading. Highlights are Earth Systems & Environment and Geography both at 70% and Applied Mathematics and Archaeology both at 75%. In comparison with other UK departments, based on total output classed as internationally excellent or better, Geography is 1st in the UK, Anthropology 2nd, and Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry are all in the top 10.

The University has many world-class Research Institutes including The Photonics Materials Institute, the Centre for Renewable Energy and Centre for Advanced Instrumentation (based at NETPark).

Named the Sunday Times University of the Year 2005/6, 85% of Durham's staff have been assessed as undertaking research work of international significance.
