Newcastle University
Newcastle University is one of the UK's leading research universities. A member of the elite Russell Group, an association of leading research-intensive UK universities, the University has a range of internationally renowned Research Institutes and Research Centres.
Newcastle University fared spectacularly in the Research Assessment Exercise 2008 in the field of medicine – 90% of staff submitted in Cancer Studies were rated as being world-leading and of international excellence (4* or 3*), as were 70% in clinical areas, and 60% in Biological Science. Other scientific areas were equally successful: 65% in Mechanical Engineering, 90% in Civil Engineering, 70% in Computer Science and 65% in Environmental Sciences.
Numerous successful spin-off businesses have emerged from research work, and Newcastle was named recently as one of the UK's top universities for technology transfer.
Its strong partnership with local NHS Trusts is a key factor in Newcastle's success and it is also a key partner in Newcastle Biomedicine. This is a world leading collaboration of research scientists, engineers, medical doctors and teaching professionals with key areas of focus which include ageing, stem cells, cancer, cell biology, genetics, drug development, medicine in society and neuroscience.
