Among the stated aims of Northumbria University's mission is "a commitment to research and scholarly activity in the generation and dissemination of knowledge and understanding".

 

With strengths in computing, engineering, information science and design, other research groups at Northumbria include the Energy Systems and Advanced Materials Group, the Photovoltaics Applications Centre, Intelligent Modelling Lab, the Northumbria Communications Research Lab and the Manufacture and Design Group.

 

Northumbria was winner of the Best Knowledge Transfer Partnership 2004 - a demonstration of its commitment to putting its knowledge, technology and skills at the service of businesses and organisations to improve their competitiveness and productivity.

 

35% of Northumbria’s staff submitted for assessment in the RAE 2008 were rated as being world-leading and of international excellence (4* or 3*). Particularly strong were Engineering (50%) and Architecture (50%). Also performing well was the School of Art and Design of which Jonathan Ive, the designer of the Apple iPod, is an alumnus.
