Sunderland University is committed to working with the widest possible range of partners to achieve change and development in its learners, in the City and the Region.

Its Media Centre provides the latest teaching, research and commercial facilities for subjects including TV, radio, video and new media production, journalism, PR, film, media and cultural studies. Sunderland aims to become an international powerhouse for the creative industries.

Encouraging enterprise and innovation to thrive is at the heart of the University's strategy and all students are given the opportunity to study 'enterprise modules' as part of their course. In The Hatchery, Creativitiworks and St Peter's Gate, fledgling entrepreneurs and knowledge-based businesses have the opportunity to develop in some of the best facilities in the UK.

In addition to research in design, media and new media, Sunderland is also home to the Institute for Automotive and Manufacturing Advanced Practice, the Biological Sciences Research Group, the Centre for Adaptive Systems, the Centre for Electronic Commerce, the Centre for Environmental Informatics, the Hybrid Intelligent Systems Group and the Theoretical and Applied Simulation Laboratory.

The University of Sunderland performed well in the Research Assessment Exercise 2008 – seven of the sixteen areas submitted by the University in the RAE were identified as being 'world leading' research and two thirds of the research submitted was classed as 'internationally recognised'. 65% of staff submitted for assessment in Communication, Culture and Media Studies were rated as being world-leading and of international excellence (4* or 3*). Art and Design also fared well with 40% of staff rated thus.
