The public are backing scientists over the creation of human-animal embryos, a survey has shown.
Some 50% of people polled were in favour of the controversial experiments, which will allow scientists to create embryos with human DNA and animal cells.
Only 30% of respondents were opposed to the plans, the Populus poll for the Times revealed.
Scientists believe the work is vital for progressing the treatment and prevention of conditions such as Parkinson's, Alzhemier's, cancer and heart disease.
But opponents, including prominent church leaders, insist that the creation of human-animal embryos is not justified.
The survey comes after The Christian Legal Centre launched a legal fight against a decision to allow Newcastle University and King's College London students to create human-animal embryos for research.
The poll also comes just weeks before the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill is debated in the Commons.
