Canadian firm Bombardier is to invest £500m in its Belfast plant for the design and manufacture of wings for a new generation of commuter aircraft.

The largest ever investment by a single company in Northern Ireland follows the decision by Bombardier, announced at the Farnborough International Airshow, to start production of a revolutionary new family of 110 - 130 seat commuter jets.

The investment will secure the medium to long term future of the aircraft plant in Belfast and sustain at least 800 jobs some of them new - attracting some £155 million in government support.

Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness welcomed the investment.

Bombardier's investment will also benefit the wider UK aerospace supply chain, and the company is discussing possible work packages with a range of companies based around the UK.

The Government expects wider UK aerospace industry to capitalise on this opportunity, particularly in the area of composite materials, placing the UK well for future civil aircraft programmes.
