A North East technology company is developing a system which could make human call centres a thing of the past.
Artificial intelligence firm Artingence, based at Newcastle's Centre for Life science village, is developing technology which will allow the centres to be staffed by computerised "robot" software agents.
These agents, which will sound and respond like real people, will be trained and managed in the same way that staff are at present. The aim is for businesses to be able to focus on improving customer service rather than dealing with staffing issues.
Cost savings mean that companies would be able to bring their operations back to the UK rather than running them offshore, creating high grade jobs locally.
Company director Karl Dorner said the innovation would cost a fraction of what it costs to employ human staff, and could create new jobs in the North East.
"Unlike human agents, they provide consistently excellent customer service while staffing and management overheads are dramatically reduced," he said.
