First hydrogen fuel station opens

2008-04-18
Newsfeed

Britain's first hydrogen gas fuel station has been opened at the University of Birmingham.

Britain's first hydrogen gas fuel station has been opened at the University of Birmingham.

It is hoped research at the station will lead to the environmentally-friendly fuel being used commercially.

The university already operates a fleet of hydrogen-powered vehicles and hopes research at the fuel station will help experts discover what adaptations are needed to make hydrogen a more cost effective fuel of the future.

Birmingham engineers will be comparing five hydrogen powered vehicles with the University's own fleet of petrol, diesel and pure 'electric' vehicles so that they can learn more about their efficiency and performance.

Professor Kevin Kendall, lead investigator at the university's department of chemical engineering, said: "It is absolutely necessary that we have the means to refuel our fleet of hydrogen powered cars so that we can carry out our research project into the feasibility of hydrogen in a transport context."
