3D memory chip venture announced

Computing experts SanDisk and Toshiba are teaming up to develop and manufacture re-writeable 3D memory, it has been revealed.

The move means that the two firms will contribute to and cross-license technology for 3D memory chip development and production.

It is hoped that the venture will result in a new type of memory technology which would take over from Sandisk's main product, NAND flash memory, which is used to store photos, songs and other data in iPods, iPhones, digital cameras and other devices.

The technology for producing 3D memory chips was developed several years ago, giving the potential for lowering costs and significantly boosting the amount of memory able to be stored on a chip. That early development, however, did not allow for the chips to be written over, whereas the new joint venture between SanDisk and Toshiba aims to produce rewriteable memory chips that can be used over and over again.

Industry experts believe it will take at least three to four years to replace NAND flash with 3D memory chips as production technology is not yet advanced enough to manufacture the chips at high enough yields.
