The First Minister has announced that a new £10m life sciences institute is to be created in Scotland.
The First Minister has announced that a new £10m life sciences institute is to be created in Scotland.
The centre will be situated at Dundee University under the direction of leading scientist Sir Phillip Cohen.
Alex Salmond said the new centre will add to Scotland's existing research capability and enhance work taking place across the country in the life sciences sector.
He added: "It is a contribution that I believe will bring significant benefits to Dundee, and to Scotland, with our £1bn life science sector."
The Scottish Institute for Cell Signalling will look into an area of life sciences which deals with how cells behave and communicate. Research could help treat diseases such as cancer and diabetes.
Sir Phillip said: "Cell signalling is one of the largest branches of the life sciences and an area of great importance to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
"Dundee is recognised as a world leader in this field and the new institute will not only reinforce its position but also enable it to develop new strengths in emerging areas of cell signalling that will furnish the major drug targets of the future."
