The MoD is running a competition to develop unmanned flying saucers, tri-blade helicopters and moonbuggies that could one day help UK troops search out enemy threats.
The search systems, which are being developed by business and university teams, went on display in London this week and are designed to detect and identify a range of threats in an urban environment, including armed combatants, snipers and roadside bombs.
Commanders on the ground are then fed information that the vehicles have gathered and decide what action to take.
Baroness Ann Taylor, Minister for Defence Equipment and Support, said: "We are continually looking for new ways to counter the threats faced by our Armed Forces on operations.
"It is vital that the latest technologies are rapidly incorporated into equipment for our troops."
The MoD hopes to finance six teams after an August final at Copehill Down, on Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire, where a village specially built by the military for urban warfare training will allow participants to showcase their systems.
