A £1 million grant has been awarded to help build the world's first purpose-built institute for research into end of life care, Care Services Minister Ivan Lewis has announced.
The new centre, the Cicely Saunders Institute for Palliative Care, will enable research to continue to examine support and treatments for conditions such as MS, end-stage renal disease, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cancer.
The new building will also allow leading researchers to deliver high quality palliative care solutions for patients, as well as providing education, patient information and support.
Cicely Saunders International, which was set up to promote and carry out research, teaching and training into palliative care, is working in partnership with King's College London on the facility to be based in south east London.
The new building will bring together a number of academics, healthcare professionals, community organisations, patients and carers.
The grant from the Department of Health grant will help meet the costs of constructing and fitting the Institute with teaching space for researchers and students.
