Cambridge-based biotechnology company Astex Therapeutics has been named as one of three finalists for the 100,000-euro European Biotechnica Award 2008.


Cambridge-based biotechnology company Astex Therapeutics has been named as one of three finalists for the 100,000-euro European Biotechnica Award 2008.

The company researches and develops small-molecule drugs, including five that are now being tested for use against cancer. Three are undergoing clinical trials and two are in pre-clinical development.

In addition to its research programs, Astex`s also focusses on developing partnerships with reputable pharmaceutical companies.

The other two finalists are German biotech companies Geneart and immatics. This year will mark the sixth anniversary of the award presented by Deutsche Messe and partners.

Spokesman Stephan Kühne said: "Innovation capacity is the driving force behind the economic success of one of the most important sectors of the future.

"With the European Biotechnica Award, we are supporting upcoming biotechnology firms which, thanks to their dedication, make a significant contribution to the development of Europe as a research location."

Professor Dr Peter Stadler, chairman of the international jury that nominated the companies, said: "All three have shown proof of excellent business expertise, while their products, services and business ideas are certainly a valuable asset to the European biotechnology sector."
