The head of a new engineering department at the University of Brighton has been appointed, as a direct result of a joint venture between the institution and an engineering firm.

The announcement that Morgan Heikal will become the Ricardo Professor of Automotive Engineering is the latest development in a successful industry-university partnership which was established 16 years ago.

The funding provided by Ricardo UK Ltd for the post represents a three-year extension to the company's research contract with the university.

Professor Heikal will be heading up the university's Internal Combustion Engines Group, operator of the £3m Sir Harry Ricardo engineering laboratories which was launched two years ago.

The group is one of the largest UK research teams dedicated to internal combustion engines and the development of laser-based diagnostic measurement techniques, used in modelling and computational simulation.

It recently developed a revolutionary engine concept that could reduce fuel consumption by 27% by combining the benefits of two and four-stroke combustion.

Ricardo technology director Neville Jackson said: "We believe that combustion research work at the University of Brighton led by Professor Heikal is at the leading edge internationally. We have found that the fundamental research work at the university contributes enormously to our own work in engine research, design and development where we have complementary skills."
