A £13 billion private finance deal for a new fleet of refuelling and transport

A £13 billion private finance deal for a new fleet of refuelling and transportaircraft is to bring work to Oxfordshire and West Sussex.The 27-year contract will see the RAF's ageing TriStar and VC10 aircraft replaced with Airbus A330s.A fleet of 14 planes will be owned and maintained by AirTanker Limited but leased to the Air Force under the world's largest defence PFI deal.The Ministry of Defence said the deal, for tanker and passenger planes to start work in 2011, will create about 600 jobs and preserve thousands more.Much of the new building work and all of the work, to convert planes into tankers will be carried out in the UK.Defence minister Baroness Taylor said: "This deal represents great news for the Royal Air Force and great news for British industry and jobs."The A330s will provide a state-of-the-art air-to-air tanker and passenger aircraft supporting operations around the world and delivering British forces to operational theatres."New facilities to house and operate the aircraft will be built at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, while construction on the planes' wings will be carried out at Airbus UK, which has bases in Filton, near Bristol, and Broughton in North Wales.Refuelling equipment work will be carried out by Cobham Plc in Wimborne, Dorset and Bournemouth while other operations will see work done in Derby, south London and Somerset.Copyright © The Press Association 2008
