Scientists from around the world have gathered in Edinburgh for first national conference covering the entire stem cell research field.
The UK National Stem Cell Network meeting comes as the controversial Bill governing the research goes through Westminster.
The proposed legislation, which would allow for the creation of human-animal hybrid embryos, has been condemned by some church leaders, but scientists feel it could help treat a number of serious diseases.
Delegates will look at whether future stem cell treatments could increase cancer risks, whether stem cells could be able to regenerate defective body parts and how stem cell therapy could help treat stroke victims.
US stem cell scientists and international researchers will address the meeting, which runs until Friday, at the Edinburgh Conference Centre at Heriot-Watt University.
